Madeira Airport: Global Leader in CO2 Reduction

Madeira Airport: Global Leader in CO2 Reduction

Madeira Airport has achieved Level 5 Airport Carbon Accreditation, demonstrating a remarkable 96.74% reduction in CO2 emissions within a few years.

Madeira Airport has recently attained an exceptional environmental milestone by achieving Level 5 Airport Carbon Accreditation, and becoming a global leader in CO2 reduction efforts.

This recognition places Madeira Airport among the first 10 airports globally to reach the highest level in the esteemed Airport Carbon Accreditation program!

Global Recognition at COP 28 Event

The commendable achievement was officially announced at the Global Sustainable Aviation Forum, an event held as part of COP 28, with a central focus on aviation sustainability. This recognition reinforces Madeira Airport's commitment to environmental stewardship and positions it as a global leader in sustainable aviation practices.

Level 5 Accreditation: A Testament to Carbon Reduction Success

To attain Level 5 accreditation, airports must demonstrate a minimum 90% reduction in CO2 emissions under their control. Madeira Airport joined the program in 2014, starting at Level 1.

Since its entry into the program, the now-renamed Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport has not only met but surpassed this requirement, achieving a remarkable 96.74% reduction in carbon emissions between 2014 and 2022.

Leading the Way: Ponta Delgada and Beja Airports

It is noteworthy that Madeira Airport is not alone in its commitment to environmental sustainability. Ponta Delgada and Beja Airports have also received maximum certification in carbon management, contributing to Portugal's collective efforts in fostering sustainable aviation practices.

Reducing the Carbon Footprint

Madeira Airport's ascent to Level 5 Airport Carbon Accreditation signifies a paradigm shift in the aviation industry towards environmental responsibility. This accomplishment is a testament to the airport's proactive measures to significantly reduce its carbon footprint.

Keep in mind that achieving this milestone does not imply that your next travel destination will be reached with near-zero CO2 emissions. Aircraft themselves continue to be the primary contributors to CO2 emissions.

Safe travels!
